Rachel drops out of “Passengers”

THR is reporting that Rachel dropped out of her upcoming movie “Passengers“. The US distribution company TWC also pulled out. Rachel was expected to start filming in April in Berlin, Germany.

Keanu Reeves’ space romance Passengers won’t hit theaters on April 3, 2015 after all. The independent project is also in the process of finding a new female lead after Rachel McAdams dropped out.

The Weinstein Co. acquired U.S. rights to the movie in one of the biggest deals of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival but pulled Passengers from its release calendar in recent days. Wayfare Films is financing and producing the movie alongside Company Films, the production shingle run by Reeves and Stephen Hamel.

With McAdams’ departure and the resulting production delay, The Weinstein Co. withdrew from the project, according to sources. CAA, which packaged the film and is handling domestic rights, will now shop Passengers to other U.S. distributors. Exclusive Media is representing international rights.

Insiders say Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire director Brian Kirk was set to start shooting Passengers in Germany on April 7, but the start date has been pushed back by at least several weeks, if not more.

  1. Why did you really drop out? I think Keanu Reeves is a great person so what was the purpose?

  2. Yeah, why did she drop out? I mean, it looks like a good project and people are looking forward to it mentioning that it’s the next Gravity. It could garner her major awards and nominations.

  3. It is really sad and disappointing news, I myself was looking forward to this project. There has not been reported a reason so far but my best guess is that the delay might have caused schedule conflicts for Rachel. The reports also give an impression that the production is delated indefinitely so maybe Rachel (and the distributor TWC) didn’t want to wait for it and preferred looking for other projects. This is just me speculating so nothing has been officially confirmed.

  4. sad news…i was looking forward to (hopefully) meet her in berlin..:(
wasn’t it set to be released in 2015 from the beginning?
& Rachel was cast from the beginning so,to me,there might have been some financial complications causing Rachel to drop out, and as a consequence of that one distributor dropped out as well and now the movie has been (of course) pushed back.
    well,just bad news…
