“Spotlight” recently hit another milestone: it passed the 20 million mark at the U.S. box office. The movie is also a personal milestone for Rachel. It currently holds her highest rated Rotten Tomatoes score with 97% (168 reviews) and a 93 Metacritics score (44 reviews). The movie received nods at the Boston, Los Angeles, New York and Washington Critics’ awards last week and received even more awards and nominations this week. We will round them up in this news update. First up are the individual nods for Rachel: The Las Vegas Film Critics Society announced it’s nominees and Rachel is nominated for Best Supporting Actress and shares the category with Alicia Vikander, Kate Winslet, Elizabeth Banks and Jennifer Jason Leigh. The “Spotlight” also received a Best Ensemble nomination alongside the cast of The Big Short, The Hateful Eight, Straight Outta Compton and Trumbo. The movie is also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Mark Ruffalo), Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing and Best Score. The Phoenix Film Critics’ Society also announced it’s nominees and Rachel is once again nominated for Best Supporting Actress and shares the category with Helen Mirren, Alicia Vikander, Julie Walters and Kate Winslet. The “Spotlight” ensemble is also nominated for Best Ensemble Acting. They share the category with The Big Short, The Hateful Eight, Trumbo and The Walk. The movie is also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Mark Ruffalo), Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score and Best Film Editing. Rachel was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress category at the Indiana Film Journalists Association Awards. She lost to Greta Gerwig.
The Vancouver, Chicago, Houston, St. Louis, San Diego film critics’ societies also announced their winners this week while the Southeastern, Toronto, Detroit, Dallas-Fort Worth, Online Critics and San Francisco announced their nominees. The London Film Critics’ Circle (via Variety) also announced their nominees and “Spotlight” is nominated for several awards, including Film of the Year. The movie is also nominated for Best Film at the Vancouver Film Critics Circle. Chicago Film Critics Association announced their nominations and the movie is nominated in several categories, including Best Picture. The Houston Film Critics Society nominated the movie with 4 nominations, including Best Picture. The St. Louis Film Critics also nominated the movie for several categories, including Best Picture. San Diego Film Critics Society also nominated the movie for several categories, including Best Picture and Best Ensemble.
Awards
The “Spotlight” cast won several awards at the Southeastern Film Critics awards including Best Ensemble and Best Picture. The Toronto Film Critics Association named the movie runner-up for Best Picture. The movie also won Best Ensemble, Best Film, Best Supporting Actor (Liev Schreiber) and Best Screenplay at the 2015 Detroit Film Critics Society Awards. The Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association awarded the movie with Best Picture and Best Screenplay. The Online Film Critics Society named the movie Best Original Screenplay and nominated the movie for other categories, including Best Picture. San Francisco Film Critics Circle awarded the movie with Best Picture.
