2017 A Look Ahead

We want to wish everyone a happy new year! Our look ahead is turning into an annual post just like our year in review. Last year and the year before we gave you a look ahead of 2016 and 2015. We will give you a look ahead of what we can expect in 2017.

  • Game Night (New Line)

Director: Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley | Writer: Jonathan Goldstein, John Francis Daley, Dana Fox, Mark Perez| With: Jason Bateman.
Plot: a group of couples who gather for their regularly planned game night when something goes murderously wrong.
Current status: Announced/Pre-production. Early this year it was reported that Rachel is in negotiations to join Jason Bateman in “Game Night“. The movie, which is Rachel’s first true comedy since “Wedding Crashers“, has been around since 2013. It’s based on a pitch by Mark Perez and Batemans has been attached to this since the beginning.
    Release: TBA

  • Kursk (EuropaCorp)

Director: Thomas Vinterberg | Writer: Robert Rodat, Robert Moore (novel) | With: Colin Firth, Matthias Schoenaerts.
Plot: The film centers on a true story of the Kursk, a nuclear-powered Russian submarine that sank during a training exercise in the Barents Sea in 2000. Twenty-three sailors survive the crash and desperately wait for help to arrive while their oxygen runs out minute-by-minute.
Current status: Announced/Pre-production. Last year a report from Belgium movie news site Vertigo caught our attention. They are reporting that Rachel is attached, alongside Matthias Schoenaerts and Colin Firth, to star in Thomas Vinterberg’s upcoming movie “Kursk“. According to their twitter feed they are basing Rachel’s attachment on a press release by Schoenaerts’ manager. Schoenaerts and Firth’s attachment to this movie have been widely reported by the press, but no (trade) reports thus far on Rachel’s (possible) attachment. Firth’s attachment was first reported by Deadline, while Schoenaert’s was the first to join the production last year. Vertigo is reporting the production will start filming in March. However, no recent reports have been made about the development of the movie and the filming got postponed before because of the reviewing of the filming permit request.
    Release: 2017

  • ***

While none of the projects below seem to have the official greenlight, there have been reports about follow up installments for the following movies. Keep in mind that none of these are confirmed as well as Rachel’s involvement:

    Sherlock Holmes 3 (Warner Bros)

Director: Guy Ritchie (rumored) | Writer: Arthur Conan Doyle (characters), Kieran Fitzgerald, Justin Malen, Drew Pearce, Nicole Perlman, Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Gary Whitta | With: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law.
Plot: Third installment of Warner Bros’ Sherlock Holmes movie series.
Current status: According to recent reports the movie is still a “top priority” for Warner Bros. Furthermore, these recent reports also indicate that the third installment is still very much in development with Warner Bros hiring new writers to work on the screenplay. Back in April of 2016 it was reported that they were planning to start filming before the end of 2016. However, no recent reports have confirmed a start date. It should be noted that Rachel’s involvement has never been reported and she recently told reporters, “I don’t know anything about [it]”.
    Release: TBA

  • Wedding Crashers 2 (New Line)

Director: David Dobkin (reported) | Writer: Evan Susser & Van Robichaux | With: Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Isla Fisher (all reported).
Plot: Sequel to “Wedding Crashers” (2005).
Current status: Early development. Early talks about the possibility of a “Wedding Crashers 2” have been around ever since the release and success of the first movie. Back in 2011 reports suggested a sequel was in the works but no firm reports were made. However, co-star Isla Fisher revealed a few months ago that the sequel might happen. Trade sources confirmed the new a few days later and also reported that Susser and Van Robichaux were hired for the script. Further, they reported that New Line is planning to ask David Dobkin to return as director, along with the original stars Wilson, Vaughn, Fisher and Rachel herself. No word yet on wether Will Ferrell, Bradley Cooper or Christopher Walken will return.
Past mentions: Rachel has frequently mentioned that she had the most fun making “Wedding Crashers”. She told reporters back in 2013, “People have asked me what film I had the best time on, and I’d say Wedding Crashers. It was an absolutely beautiful time of year, filming out on the Chesapeake.” Also in 2013 a reporter asked her if she would be open to reprising her role as Claire Cleary in a sequel – “In a heartbeat — yeah, I would. It’s actually one of the movies I’ve had the most fun on.”
    Release: TBA

  • Mean Girls Sequel (Paramount)

Plot: Sequel to “Mean Girls” (2004).
Current status: There hasn’t really been any official reports that indicate the possibility of a sequel to “Mean Girls” but reporters often asked the original cast about the possibility and wether they are interested in doing a sequel because the movie has such a huge (popculture) following. Recently, former co-star Lindsay Lohan recently sparked interested again because she told CNN she has been “trying so hard to do a ‘Mean Girls 2’” and adding she even wrote a treatment for it. Tina Fey has been working on the Mean Girls musical and it was recently announced that it will premiere this year on October 3rd.
Past mentions: Rachel, just like her former co-stars, gets frequently asked about ‘Mean Girls’ and her interest in doing a sequel. Most recently she was asked during the “Doctor Strange” promotion tour. She told E! News, “I mean, I loved that movie. I love Tina Fey. I love the girls”. Further, Rachel previously told reporters she would sign onto anything that Tina Fey wrote. Most recently she told reporters, “I’ll follow Tina Fey anywhere. She’s our master-in-chief on this one. So, if she’s into it [doing a Mean Girls sequel], then I’m into it.” Fun fact: Tina Fey told NPR a few years ago that she learned from Rachel while filming “Mean Girls.
    Release: TBA

  • To summarize: Rachel is expected to start filming “Disobedience” on January 3rd and she is possibly attached to “Kursk“. Furthermore, while none of these projects have officially gotten a greenlight there seem to be interested by the studios in developing another installment for “Sherlock Holmes” and possibly “Wedding Crashers“. “Mean Girls” is also making headlines again but no (official) word yet that indicates Paramount being interested in doing a follow-up installment with the original cast.

We would also like to remind everyone that “The Little Prince” is currently still available for streaming on Netflix U.S. while “Doctor Strange” is expected to get released on DVD/Blu-Ray in March.
