Disobedience (2017)

Adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s Best Selling Novel

Romantic-drama based on Naomi Alderman’s novel about the estranged daughter (Ronit) of a rabbi who returns from New York to the Orthodox Jewish neighbourhood she grew up in Hedon, North London, following her father’s death. However, her arrival causes significant upheaval in the quiet community. And it’s the story of Esti, Ronit’s childhood friend, who stayed in Hedon even though the community consider her strange. And it’s the story of Dovid, Esti’s husband; he’s heir presumptive to Ronit’s father, but doesn’t seem to want the post. The movie is currently in post-production after filming early 2017 in London and New York and no release date has been announced yet.

Triva & Facts

  • Rachel McAdams and Rachel Weisz previously worked together on Terrence Malick’s film “To The Wonder”, however Weisz’s scenes did not make it into the final cut. Rachel Weisz and Alessandro Nivola previously worked together on I Want You (1998).
  • This is Sebastián Lelio’s first English language movie.
  • Quotes from Rachel

“I’m working on a film called ‘Disobedience’ with Rachel Weisz and we are actually going to shoot it here [in London]. It is based on a very lovely novel and it’s set in a Jewish Ortodox community here in Hendon.”
On filming the movie (BBC Radio 2)

“I remember her [Rachel Weisz] telling me her mom put her in dresses as a kid but her hair would be a total mess and her knees scraped up and she’d be off playing in the dirt. I feel like that little kid is still in her. She’s this gorgeous, timeless, poised, wickedly smart beauty, but she likes to keep things messy and unexpected.”

    Quotes from Cast & Crew

“We worked in a very similar way, in that neither of us liked to sit and analyze it. We were just like, ‘Let’s do it and see what happens.’ And she’s very touching and tender and soulful as Esti and as a person.”
Rachel Weisz on Rachel McAdams (New York Times)
