Rachel Covers Violet Book (October 2018)

Rachel is gracing another cover to promote the upcoming release of “Disobedience“, which will be released in cinemas tomorrow in the UK. Rachel is on the cover of the current issue of Violet Book magazine which is currently on newsstands. She is interviewed by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, the screenwriter of the movie. It’s a really nice and in-depth interview which you can find our press archives. We have added the scans and photoshoot outtakes in our gallery.

On what drew her to ‘Disobedience’: “I felt that way about all the characters and I think that’s what I was drawn to initially, was this script, where every character had their own really rich and complete arch and no one was using the other person just to surface the story, you know, and everyone was on a really interesting journey. It didn’t feel like anyone was pushed to the side, and even Dovid [played by Alessandro Nivola], the cuckold—you know, he wasn’t just a device, he was a real person.”

On not wanting to direct: “Especially in film, like I said, without the rehearsal, and it’s just like, all the stars have to be aligned. Sometimes I’m just amazed that movies get made, I’m amazed that they come together, there’s so many moving parts, and I do think a director often is… I would never want to direct because I’m terrible at decision making. I can’t make snap decisions, I have to really think things through and sort of waffle back and forth and play devil’s advocate and be my own worst enemy and then I come back around and— Anyway, it’s exhausting […] But I could never be a director because it’s just constantly having to make decisions, and sometimes I’ve talked to directors and they’re like, ‘You almost just fake it ’til you make it’, and so I think there’s no much on a director’s plate. I’m kind of a pest [laughs]. But that’s just my process.”

On how ‘Mean Girls’ influenced her future project choices: “I think that’s when I first started to think, like, oh, use your voice as best you can, and then, at the same time, just show a variety of people. I think that goes to show a diverse swath of characters and that women can be all kinds of things. They can be strong in one moment and weak in another, and it’s not over, you know—weakness is suggestive, and so not just get into playing the idea of the strong woman, which is quite limiting.”

On #MeToo “Yeah, how do we not swing so far the other way? With #MeToo and everything I feel like it’s been amazing. There’s a revolution happening, and just in my industry, all the older, seasoned actresses are looking back and thinking, ‘Oh yeah, we did this as well in the 60s and 70s and now it just came back around again.’ And is this just a reincarnation of it or is there real change happening? I feel like there’s real change happening. But I suppose the danger is, I don’t know, you swing so far one way and then, you know, it’s like with American politics [laughs], you wind up in this echo chamber. And then the other group suddenly feels marginalised and like they’re losing their power and start to rise up and it’s like, how do we find that middle ground where everyone feels heard and everyone feels human and everyone has compassion for all people. But I also think you kinda have to fight hard and use your anger to get anywhere.”

Rachel graced the cover of this past weekend’s issue of The Sunday Times’ (UK) Style Magazine to promote the upcoming release of “Disobedience” in the UK. We have added the (digital) scans in our gallery as well as the photoshoot outtakes. The interview can be found in our press archives and excerpts can be found below. “Disobedience” will be out in cinemas on November 30 in the UK.

On her breakout year: “Timing is such a funny thing. They were very different roles and genres, which allowed me more choice.”

On motherhood: “It’s the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me, hands down. [People say] your life is not your own any more. But I had 39 years of me, I was sick of me, I was so happy to put the focus on some other person. I waited a long time [for motherhood].”

On the theme of ‘Disobedience’: “It’s so tragic to think that, of all the problems in this world, we make it an issue who you want to love. It drives me nuts.”

“Disobedience” Opening Weekend Box Office Results

Disobedience” had a strong opening in the box office this weekend and doubles the opening numbers of any film from Bleecker Street according IndieWire. Deadline is reporting the movie posts no #2 thus far in the box office of the limited releases of this year. The movie will be slowly expanding to more theaters the coming week and will officially go nationwide on May 18 in the United States. Be sure to head over to the official website disobedience.movie to find a theater near you.

Fresh from an Oscar win for Best Foreign Language Film for A Fantastic Woman, Sebastián Lelio scored with English-language drama/romance Disobedience, which had the second-best limited bow of 2018 on a per-theater average basis. The Bleecker Street title starring Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams grossed $241K in five locations, averaging $48,255. (The only better limited debut this year has been Searchlight’s Isle of Dogs, which averaged $60,011 per theater in its March debut and has cumed $27 million to date.)

Bleecker Street said Sunday that Disobedience saw strong LGBT and art house patronage over the weekend in its New York and LA launch, with a wide age range from 20s to 50-pluses. “Sellouts occurred in all houses throughout the weekend, particularly during prime evening shows,” said Bleecker Street’s Jack Foley told Deadline. “Mid-afternoon matinees were near capacity… We are extremely happy with the weekend’s business. I think if we had more seats, frankly, we would have done more business.”

Foley noted that the female-to-male ratio was 70-30% at the Angelika in downtown Manhattan, while at uptown site Lincoln Square it came in closer to 50-50. Disobedience is also Bleecker Street’s biggest platform release ever, just ahead of Eye In the Sky, which opened in five locations in April 2016, grossing $113,803 ($22,761 PTA).

Bleecker Street will widen Disobedience to Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Washington D.C., Denver, Phoenix, Minneapolis, Atlanta and Portland. New York and L.A. will also add more locations.

“Disobedience” Opens In Select Theaters Today!

Disobedience” is opening in selected theaters – in New York and Los Angeles – in the United States starting today. The movie will expand to more cities the coming weeks and will open nationwide on May 18. To find the release schedule be sure to head over to the official website. Rachel stars in the movie alongside Rachel Weisz and Alessandro Nivola with Sebastián Lelio directing. It’s based on Naomi Alderman’s book with a screenplay by Lelio and Rebecca Lenkiewicz. The movie has been very well received with critics praising the leads performances, be sure to check out our reviews round-up in case you missed it. While we always try to have a – somewhat – neutral stand and not favorite any projects of Rachel and promote them equally we do want to take this opportunity to ask everyone to go and support this movie by seeing it in theaters. It seems a passion project of everyone involved and we think it’s important to show support for smaller independent movies like this. To quote the official twitter account, the movie “asks the audience to question many societal norms” and we think representation on-screen (and off-screen) matters.

“Disobedience” Reviews Round-Up

“Disobedience” Reviews Round-Up

Disobedience” is getting critical acclaim thus far and currently holds a 91% rating at Rotten Tomatoes (making it officially certified ‘Fresh’) and 75 Meta Critics Score. Rachel’s performance especially gets praise with critics calling her performance a “stand-out” and “powerhouse“. We will round-up the reviews in this post and we will – as always – focus on the Rachel-centered excerpts. And in case you missed it we rounded-up the reviews after the TIFF premiere in our previous post.

“It’s astounding performances, and complex themes flirt with the dangers and beauty of love in a compassionate, lucid manner. Unsure what sauce Rachel McAdams has been sipping since her Oscar nomination for “Spotlight” in 2015 but the actress had found her hinted mojo that we saw when she emerged onto the scene fourteen years ago with “The Notebook” and “Mean Girls.” She taps into the universal anxieties regarding an examination of one’s self while still simmering in a stunning atmosphere that features eye-catching visuals. McAdams may very well be on her way to her second Oscar nomination, and it wouldn’t be underserved. Esti is heartened and reserved but explores ranges that are both delicate and voluptuous.”
Clayton Davis, Award Circuit

3.5/4 stars
“McAdams, for her part, is quietly devastating as a wife trying to measure what would be lost if she broke free to follow her heart. Weisz and McAdams, two extraordinary actresses at the top of their game, cut so deep into their characters you can almost feel their nerve endings.”
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
