Whether on or off screen, love seems to follow actress Rachel McAdams wherever she goes.

Having dated her The Notebook co-star Ryan Gosling and fallen for Michael Sheen on the set of Midnight in Paris, the 36-year-old has also been linked to Jake Gyllenhaal, with whom she stars in fight movie Southpaw.

On screen, Canadian-born Rachel has repeatedly proved her rom-com credentials and she’s at her romantic best again in Cameron Crowe movie Aloha, due out in the autumn, as part of a love triangle involving Bradley Cooper and Emma Stone.

You often star in romantic movies, Rachel. Are you a romantic in real life? “I confess. I am. I love romance and I think it’s really fun and delicious. Some of my favourite films are love stories. You just get a chance to fall in love with a character so much, explore their lives so deeply and experience all these intimate moments that you’re not privy to in life. I find relationships so fascinating. Just watching my parents, they’ve been together so long and are still so very much in love. I’m in awe of that.”

What attracted you to Aloha? “I just loved the script and thought it was like nothing I had ever come across before. My character Tracy was a complicated woman with lots on her plate, at a very important time in her life. So it’s very rich and colourful and I love how Cameron writes women.”

What was it like working with Bradley? “It’s such a wonderful thing to work with Bradley because he has so much passion, not just for his character but for the whole film and the whole process. He approaches every scene like he wants it to be the best scene ever filmed, ever. He has such energy, enthusiasm and generosity.”

You are the queen of movies that tug at the heart-strings. Do you enjoy watching weepies yourself? “I never go into a movie wanting to cry. I try to avoid those films but I’m glad when I do see them because those movies stay with you forever and you have a cathartic experience. For me, they are the most meaningful.”

What makes a perfect romantic night? “Laying on the couch watching a movie is awesome. That is ultimate romance to me. I don’t care what movie. It doesn’t really matter. It is just so romantic.”

Is it hard to hold down relationships when you’re working all over the world? “You have to be quite adaptable in this business, whether you are in a relationship or not. Trying to establish roots somewhere is a bit of a joke. You need to trust each other and be able to talk to each other and be best friends.” Finally, you must have done countless movie auditions. Do any stick out? “The weirdest thing I’ve had to do was making out with strangers. It was weird just turning up and kissing someone. I guess it was to see if there was any chemistry there. But with the one I’m thinking of I got the part, so I must’ve done something right.”
