“Disobedience” is opening in selected theaters – in New York and Los Angeles – in the United States starting today. The movie will expand to more cities the coming weeks and will open nationwide on May 18. To find the release schedule be sure to head over to the official website. Rachel stars in the movie alongside Rachel Weisz and Alessandro Nivola with Sebastián Lelio directing. It’s based on Naomi Alderman’s book with a screenplay by Lelio and Rebecca Lenkiewicz. The movie has been very well received with critics praising the leads performances, be sure to check out our reviews round-up in case you missed it. While we always try to have a – somewhat – neutral stand and not favorite any projects of Rachel and promote them equally we do want to take this opportunity to ask everyone to go and support this movie by seeing it in theaters. It seems a passion project of everyone involved and we think it’s important to show support for smaller independent movies like this. To quote the official twitter account, the movie “asks the audience to question many societal norms” and we think representation on-screen (and off-screen) matters.
“Disobedience” is getting critical acclaim thus far and currently holds a 91% rating at Rotten Tomatoes (making it officially certified ‘Fresh’) and 75 Meta Critics Score. Rachel’s performance especially gets praise with critics calling her performance a “stand-out” and “powerhouse“. We will round-up the reviews in this post and we will – as always – focus on the Rachel-centered excerpts. And in case you missed it we rounded-up the reviews after the TIFF premiere in our previous post.
“It’s astounding performances, and complex themes flirt with the dangers and beauty of love in a compassionate, lucid manner. Unsure what sauce Rachel McAdams has been sipping since her Oscar nomination for “Spotlight” in 2015 but the actress had found her hinted mojo that we saw when she emerged onto the scene fourteen years ago with “The Notebook” and “Mean Girls.” She taps into the universal anxieties regarding an examination of one’s self while still simmering in a stunning atmosphere that features eye-catching visuals. McAdams may very well be on her way to her second Oscar nomination, and it wouldn’t be underserved. Esti is heartened and reserved but explores ranges that are both delicate and voluptuous.”

3.5/4 stars
“McAdams, for her part, is quietly devastating as a wife trying to measure what would be lost if she broke free to follow her heart. Weisz and McAdams, two extraordinary actresses at the top of their game, cut so deep into their characters you can almost feel their nerve endings.”
–Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
Rachel attended the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival premiere for “Disobedience” in New York last night alongside her costars achel Weisz and Alessandro Nivola, director Sebastian Lelio, writer Naomi Alderman and the producers. “Game Night” opened nationwide this weekend in the United States and debuted second place in the box office, after Marvel’s Black Panther. Box Office Mojo is reporting that the movie earned $5.2m from 22 mostly smaller markets and opens in a further 23 this week including the UK and Germany. Leading the way was Australia with an estimated $1.5 million followed by Russia ($1.3m) and the Netherlands ($570k). Deadline is reporting the following story:
2) Game Night (NL/WB), 3,488 theaters / $5.6m Fri (includes $1M previews)/$7M Sat/ $4M Sun/3-day: $17M /Wk 1
New Line/Warner Bros.’ Game Night grew 25% on Saturday over Friday with $7M, taking its opening to $16.6M in second place, and as we mentioned, that’s OK, not fantastic, and a bit of a rebound from the studio’s R-rated laugh recession last year with The House, Fist Fight, and Alcon’s Father Figures. New Line kept this comedy as economically sound as possible, with a production cost under $40M, which is their range for the genre. At this box office level with Game Night, New Line is in the same boat of other R-rated original IP comedy openers such as Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates ($16.6M opening, $46M final domestic), Office Christmas Party ($16.9M, $54.8M), and How to Be Single ($17.8M, $46.8M), so figure it comes in within $40M-$50M at the domestic B.O. when all is said and done. R-rated comedies remain the quagmire for many studios (outside of Universal’s Girls Trip geared toward African American audiences), as studios and comedy creators continue to scratch their heads and figure out how to pull in younger crowds who’ll fuel breakout successes. Deadline is reporting that the movie made $1 million during the previews yesterday:
In the face of Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther earning $14.2M alone yesterday for a running total that will cross $300M today, New Line/Warner Bros.’ Game Night and Paramount’s Alex Garland sci-fi environmental pic Annihilation respectively pulled in $1M and $900K. Game Night will play in 3,488. Game Night is projected between $13M-$21M while Annihilation was pegged between $10M-$12M. The upside for them in a Black Panther-dominated market? Both titles have awesome Rotten Tomatoes Scores with Annihilation at 90% certified fresh and Game Night at 83% certified fresh and that’s hopeful in regards to changing the minds of those moviegoers are pledge allegiance to RT.
Game Night bulldozes comps for such R-rated summer laugh duds as Rough Night ($700K Thursday, $3.3M Friday, $8M weekend) and The House ($800K Thursday, $3.3M and $8.7M). The Hitman’s Bodyguard, which fared the best of them all, was an action comedy, which Game Night has elements of.
